Mountain goat and kid. Just felt like drawing some wintery type animals.

Toxic Venom

My own version of Venom. I don't know why, I just got it in my head that I really needed to draw him this weekend.

Unfortunately I can never figure out how to make the colors look right with low light illustrations, so this turned out a bit different from how I intended. Such is life.

Baby Thrawn Gets a Participation Award

What drives an evil genius to use a species' own art as a means to destroy them? Participation awards.

More Star Wars fanart.

If you don't get the reference, don't fret. It just means you had a life in high school.

Yule Cat

This year to celebrate the season, I decided to draw the Yule Cat of Icelandic folklore. The Yule Cat is a huge feline that prowls the frozen countryside during the Christmas season, looking for people who aren't wearing new clothes. If their clothes are old and shabby, the Yule Cat eats them.

Merry Christmas!

Talon Karrde - Thrawn Triology

Talon Karrde and one of his pet Vornskr from the Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn.

In preparation for The Force Awakens I've been rereading the Thrawn Trilogy to get back in the Star Wars spirit. To anyone that hasn't read them, they are super good. I do object to how some of the characters have been subsequently portrayed in comics, character guides, etc though. Specifically I really don't like the way that Talon Karrde has been drawn in the comics. It doesn't match with his description in the book at all, and he looks really scuzzy. So this is my version of the character.

Greedo's End

Felt like drawing some more Star Wars stuff.

This is a slight alteration of a short story from "Tales of Mos Eisley Cantina" in which Greedo's blasted remains are made into a liquor by Wuher - the Cantina bartender. Poor Greedo.

Ben Carson Wikipedia

"God originally placed the Statue of Liberty at Plymouth Rock where it welcomed the first people to North America. Some 'scientists' claim to have photographs of the statue under construction, but those images actually document the relocation of the Statue of Liberty to Staten Island." - Ben Carson Wikipedia

Dooneese Maharelle

"A do doo do doo do doo do."

One of my all time favorite SNL characters - Kristen Wiig as Dooneese Maharelle.

Wampa

A Wampa. From Hoth.

The thing I really like about the Wampa is there isn't really a set canonical design for it. He's a very Hitchcockian monster - never really fully revealed. Sure there was that really awkwardly edited sequence from the Empire special edition, but everybody just carried on doing their own designs for it afterward.

A real housewife with a preserved shrunken head. It just makes sense to me.

Not quite the same idea though.

Pennywise the Clown

Because Tim Curry plays the best creepy clown monster ever (even if the movie was kind of stupid).

The Haunted House

It's September. The air is finally getting colder. It's time for more Halloween illustrations!

This is a continuation of my tribute to the original Stephen Gammell illustrations - in particular this is from the story The Haunted House from the first Scary Stories book.

A couple of years ago Mr. Dennis Cornetta (aka Baron-Von-Jello) recreated one of the original Gammell illustrations using 3D software - baron-von-jello.deviantart.com… - which led to the idea that we should try to get a number of other illustrators to create their own tributes to the Gammell illustrations in their own styles.

So here is my challenge to all of you Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark fans - go forth and create your own tributes to the Gammell illustrations from Scary Stories! Show your love for the original Gammell work. Also - if you take up this challenge, please let me know, I'd love to see them!
Last year only one person took me up on the challenge:

Maybe this year there will be more takers?

My second attempt at Sculpey, then painted with acrylic paints and topped with modelling grass.

Man In The Moon

My first attempt at Sculpey in a very very long time. I though it would be fun to just do a quick grotesque face of the Man in the Moon. It still didn't feel finished after I put a layer of paint on it (painting light sources on 3D sculptures is HARD!), so I also stuck him in a little cage that I made out of wire. In a lot of the old folklore the Man in the Moon was banished for stealing, so it seemed appropriate.

Also, I have had that REM "Man on the Moon" song stuck in my head for about a week now.

Non-Potable Water

I dunno.

My friend sent me a ridiculous warning label that he found online, and we were debating what it could possibly be warning against. This was my theory.

It may also be something from Game of Thrones.

I caught him pulling a funny pensive expression, and thought I would share.

The Steadfast Tin Soldier

Lord Baltimore from the Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden novel and comic book series.

I was trying to replicate the look of the old staged soldier portraits from the early 1900s. Those photos are super strange. They would always have some sort of pastoral painted backdrop, as if wars were fought in a lovely wooded park. So I thought it would be funny to juxtapose that with Baltimore's rough appearance.

For anyone that hasn't read the book "Baltimore; or The Steadfast Tin Solider and the Vampire," I recommend it.

Tuatara

The New Zealand reptile (not a lizard). Tuatara are the only surviving members of their order, which peaked during the time of the dinosaurs.

A buddy of mine in New Zealand has been studying tuatara for the last couple of years, and found a successful South Island nest. It's the first time tuatara have successfully nested on the South Island in hundreds of years.

But you don't have to take my word for it - http://www.otago.ac.nz/news/news/otago089975.html

Bad Breath Battle: Coffee Vs Garlic

A cartoon of my wife and I.
I love coffee. She loves garlic. Much bad breath ensues. Hers is worse.
Based on true events.

Mordin Solus

I recently played through all three Mass Effect games, and on a replay I think that Mordin has become my favorite character in the series. Even more so than Garrus (which is really saying something). The resolution of the Mordin's storyline really illustrates all that is great about the Mass Effect series.

I was thinking it would be fun to do a series of a few of my favorite Mass Effect characters, and to start it out with the best of the bunch - that way if I lose interest (or I bow to spousal mockery), I will at least have Mordin done.
